The good news is that you don’t have to rely solely on natural, inborn traits. It is possible to develop the qualities good managers possess. You can complete a management program to learn some of the necessary characteristics, and you can also develop many desirable qualities on your own. The ability to communicate with people at all levels is almost always named as the second most important skill by project managers and team members. Project leadership calls for clear communication about goals, responsibility, performance, expectations and feedback.
A good manager is someone who is able to communicate well. Managers communicate in a 360 degree, from employees who report to them, peers, clients and their own managers. This can be in person, via phone or even written communication through email. What they say should not be evasive or unintelligible, but should be clear and concise and not have any room for ambiguity. Another important communication is non-verbal communication, especially when dealing with subordinates.
A project manager’s actions set the modus operandi for the team. Good leadership requires commitment and adherence to ethical practices. Yes, projects must be profitable; and yes, there are many ways to ensure project managers take their corporate interests into account while serving the client. However, great project managers abide by ethical standards and rewarding those team members who follow suit is part of the responsibility of the job. Project management should never be motivated by self-interest; rather it is the interest of the project’s success that matters most.
Being a project manager also requires a high degree of competence. Keep in mind that, as we state above, project management has grown to become a field of expertise in itself. Therefore, the skill set a business should look for in a project manager is not identical to that which should be sought in the other team members. Someone can be a superb software programmer, for instance, but that does not necessarily mean that he or she is the best choice to lead a project, no matter how much programming that project might require.
Managers, however, dance on a fault line - they either have the behaviours that inspire followers to do what they otherwise may not be willing to do, and without creating any psychological distress, or they do not and the costs will escalate and ripple for a long time
Good managers establish a vision and goals and then rally employees toward those goals. A good manager earns the respect of employees by making it clear to them what the expectations are in their roles. Good managers also shine when plans get derailed. They stay calm under pressure and come up with timely solutions to various business problems.
Such a specialized approach may seem like a lot of work. But in fact, capitalizing on each person’s uniqueness can save time. Rather than encourage employees to conform to strict job descriptions that may include tasks they don’t enjoy and aren’t good at, a manager who develops positions for his staff members based on their unique abilities will be rewarded with behaviors that are far more efficient and effective than they would be otherwise.
