The Isle of Dogs is a growing success. As Canary Wharf continues to expand, the second regeneration of the Isle continues to gather momentum. Recent developments and current applications attest to a significant demand for housing, commercial office and other uses. However, despite recent planning initiatives, there lacks a compelling vision for the Isle of Dogs, especially for its heart in Millwall Dock. The development community has responded to this visionary void with a mix of disconnected and inconsistent projects.
30 years ago the words urban redevelopment usually meant bulldozing large areas of run-down inner city areas to build new industrial and residential areas. City councils often bid for money from the UK government or the European Union. "Enterprise Zones" were set up, giving tax and rate-free incentives. Almost 30 inner city areas in the UK were redeveloped, including London's Docklands.

Urban Redevelopment of the London Docklands . As cities look to grow and support their population, some expand outwards, while others redevelop areas within.
Between 1961 and 1971, almost 83,000 jobs were lost in the five boroughs in the Docklands area (Greenwich, Lewisham, Newham, Tower Hamlets and Southwark). A large percentage of these jobs were from large transnational corporations. The decline was heightened by government policies which favoured the growth of industry outside London. High unemployment was accompanied by population decline. Whilst inner London lost 10% of its population between 1961 and 1971, the figures for Tower Hamlets and Southwark were 18% and 16% respectively.
It would, nevertheless, be a mistake to see gentrification and suburbanization in the same terms. Although the original move to the suburbs was by the middle classes, it was never exclusively a middle-class process nor is it necessarily even a class process. Gentrification, on the other hand, has always involved issues of social class, whatever the other disagreements about what it is ( Hamnett, 1991 ; Lees, 1994 ). Gentrification, despite the attempts of those branded by Slater (2006 ) as its apologists (which include the current author), has always been paired with displacement and is fundamentally a process of class change.

Three principal kinds of docks existed. Wet docks were where ships were laid up at anchor and loaded or unloaded. Dry docks , which were far smaller, took individual ships for repairing. Ships were built at dockyards along the riverside. In addition, the river was lined with innumerable warehouses, piers, jetties and dolphins (mooring points). The various docks tended to specialise in different forms of produce. The Surrey Docks concentrated on timber , for instance; Millwall took grain; St Katharine took wool, sugar and rubber; and so on.
