Trek to Teach is a nonprofit organization that sends fluent English speakers to teach in Nepal near the Himalayas. In addition to teaching, Trek to Teach strengthens local communities by helping schools build infrastructure, paint their classrooms, and find furniture.
Goals can be anything that you wish to achieve, where you want to be. If you are hungry then your goal is probably to eat something, if you are a head of an organisation (CEO) then your main goal may be to maximise profits. In the example of the CEO the main goal may need to be split into numerous sub-goals in order to fulfil the ultimate goal of increasing profits.
Below I have highlighted a few critical problem solving skills and ways they benefit the organization. The examples below illustrate the importance of problem solving skills in the workplace.

In the early stages of problem-solving, you need to have strong observational skills . Rather than accepting issues at face value, you need to demonstrate lateral thinking and analytical abilities . These will help you properly assess what's going on and pinpoint the core cause of the issue.
Diagnose the situation so that your focus is on the problem, not just its symptoms. Helpful techniques at this stage include using flowcharts to identify the expected steps of a process and cause-and-effect diagrams to define and analyze root causes.
Problem solving is used when products or processes fail, so corrective action can be taken to prevent further failures . It can also be applied to a product or process prior to an actual fail event, ., when a potential problem can be predicted and analyzed, and mitigation applied so the problem never actually occurs. Techniques such as Failure Mode Effects Analysis can be used to proactively reduce the likelihood of problems occurring.
Analytical and critical thinking assists in evaluating problems and making decisions. At times a logical and a methodical approach will be required and in other situations creativity and lateral thinking will be necessary.
Research has shown that, in general terms, each side or hemisphere of the brain is specialised to serve one of these groups of skills. The degree of specialisation of each hemisphere varies from person to person, but it has given rise to the terms right-brain thinking and left-brain thinking. Left-brain thinking is more logical and analytical, and is predominantly verbal. Right-brain thinking is more holistic and is concerned with feelings and impressionistic relationships.
