TOK explorers various Areas of Knowledge (AOK); mathematics, the natural sciences, the social sciences, history, the arts, ethics, and religion. In each area of knowledge the fundamental question is raised; 'How does one know?', and a consideration of the role played by perception, language, reason, and emotion in the subject in question is evaluated. Some of the 'big questions' are also touched upon, which lie on the frontier of knowledge, and include;
The TOK course is expected to involve 100 teaching hours over the two years of the Diploma Programme.  Having followed the course, students should be competent to analyse knowledge claims and respond to knowledge issues in the context of different areas of knowledge and ways of knowing, expressing ideas accurately and honestly, using examples from their own experiences as learners and in outside life.

The Theory of Knowledge course extends to you a cordial invitation to think, analyze and generally reflect on the knowledge you have already acquired. This reflective process primarily takes the form of a dialogue which lasts at least 110 hours. The TOK diagram  is an organization system of the Areas of Knowledge, Ways of Knowing, and the Knower. It is not a set-in-stone form, but rather a suggestion that may be debated upon in a Theory of Knowledge manner. The three components are integral to the TOK course and should be analyzed in great depth in order to make sure each student understands what they can describe. By knowing what each component can describe, a student may and should make well thought out conclusions concerning the components. They are broken up as follows.
The TOK Presentation is a 10-minute analysis of a real-life situation through a specific knowledge question. This should include at least one of both an Area of Knowledge and way of Knowing, and a synthesis at the end.
What makes the presentation unique is that it requires students to identify and explore a well-formulated knowledge question that is drawn from a specified real-life situation that is of interest to the presenter. The purpose of the presentation, therefore, is for students to demonstrate that analysing knowledge has practical, real-world applications.
