· Should Everyone Go to College? By: Stephanie Owen and Isabel Sawhill The Rate of Return of Education Earnings increase by $3,000 per year of education.
But the premise is starting to change, as politicians, policymakers and the public wonder if the push for access has gone too far and begin to ask, should everyone go to college?
There are, of course, the somewhat cynical answers to this question. It might be claimed that everyone should not go to college because some people are simply not intelligent enough to go to college. While honesty compels me to admit that there is some truth to this, honesty also compels me to admit that people generally overestimate the amount of intelligence required to get through college. While a certain level of intelligence is required, getting through college is often more a matter of persistence and showing up than of intellectual might.
The first is the wording. Any time I hear someone say their friend or loved one “should” go to therapy it sounds like a condemnation, and that’s contributing to the stigma that surrounds psychotherapy. Too many contentious arguments end with the shaming comment “ You should go to therapy! ” which is shorthand for “I think you’re crazy, go pay someone to fix you.” This isn’t a thoughtful recommendation of a valid path to health , it’s an insult. Many rebel against this slam as a way to save face; compliance would feel like losing the argument.

Let’s see how this works from the perspective of a student. Imagine that you’re finishing ninth grade at a large comprehensive urban high school. The year hasn’t gone very well; because you are reading and doing math at a sixth-grade level, much of your coursework is a struggle. Nor have you had much of an opportunity to develop the “non-cognitive skills” that would help you to remediate the situation. You are foundering, failing courses, and thinking about dropping out.
Americans are too complacent, and think the government will take care of them. Now, certainly not all Americans are this way, but far too high of a percentage is. People need to learn to take care of themselves. I don't believe that everyone should be forced into combat (only on a volunteer basis), but everyone should take basic training and serve for at least a year. It would drastically lower crime, increase maturity, make people smarter, more fit, and more appreciative. Although, there would have to be exceptions for those with disabilities or those who are too overweight. We can't force all Americans to be fit.
We have more people going to university in Australia than ever before. In 1971 only 2% of the population over 15 years old held a Bachelor’s degree, in 2013 it was 25% . Last year a whopping 1,149,300 people were enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree or above.
If you’re open and willing, travel will make you an incredibly more well-rounded human being. And that’s really the goal, isn’t it? If you don’t know where to start, check out our Around the World planning guide .
We spoke to young people to find out how important ethical food consumption is to them: what do they eat and do they think politicians should talk more about where our food comes from?
Many businesses now boast that they are a meritocracy, academia has been claiming this for far longer. Theoretically, this is a good thing. If you work hard, do your best and excel, you will achieve great things. However, if this is the case, why aren't women progressing to the highest echelons of society; to management in business, to professorial level in academia and to the cabinet (or shadow cabinet) in politics? There are many theories as to why, including (heaven forbid I say it) that women are just 'not up to it'. I'd just like to say that my own personal take on the matter is that women are most definitely 'up to it'! So what is going on?
Parents are also uptight. I’ve heard of some who have stopped socializing with other parents of children competing for admission to the same university.
A provocative article in USA Today by Patrick Welsh, a high school English Teacher does just that. And, what he found could provoke some heated discussions. His main concern is that many of the kids you enter college have no chance at earning a bachelor’s degree. He points to cases where 70% of students entering college drop out. His wonders if colleges are admitting students that they don’t expect to succeed solely to grow their schools and make more money.
