The first prisoners were brought to Andersonville in late February 1864. During the next few months, approximately 400 more arrived each day. By the end of June, 26,000 men were penned in an area originally meant for only 10,000 prisoners. The largest number held at any one time was more than 33,000 in August 1864. The Confederate government could not provide adequate housing, food, clothing or medical care to their Federal captives because of deteriorating economic conditions in the South, a poor transportation system, and the desperate need of the Confederate army for food and supplies.
Just a few months after opening in 1864, Andersonville began to see nearly 400 new prisoners on a daily basis. This prison was only intended to hold 10,000 prisoners at a time, but it came to hold as many as 32,000 at once. This site held more than 45,000 union prisoners over its 14 months of operation, and roughly 13,000 of them died there.

During the 14 months the prison existed, more than 45,000 Union soldiers were confined here. Of these, almost 13,000 died here. Today, Andersonville National Historic Site is a memorial to all American prisoners of war throughout the nation's history. Read More

At Andersonville, a light fence known as "the dead line" was erected approximately 3 feet ( m) inside the stockade wall. It demarcated a no-man's land that kept prisoners away from the stockade wall, which was made of rough-hewn logs about 16 feet ( m) long. Anyone crossing this line was shot by sentries located in the pigeon roosts.
In refutation of the charge that prisoners were starved, let it be noted that the Confederate Congress in May, 1861, passed a bill providing that the rations furnished to prisoners of war should be the same in quantity and quality as those issued to the enlisted men in the army of the Confederacy. And the prisoners at Andersonville received the same rations that were furnished the Confederate guard. That this was sometimes scant, every old rebel in the field can testify. But this was due to our poverty.
Conditions for the prisoners in the camp deteriorated rapidly as the number of captives increased. Diseases ran rampant with little medicine or treatment available for the ill. Food was scarce and many prisoners became skeletonized and died of starvation, dysentery, or other parasitic, bacterial or fungal diseases.
Each prisoner exerienced Andersonville on their own terms, meaning that the story of captivity here is a very complex one. The pages below explore some of the stories of Andersonville:
Andersonville National Historic Site is located in southwest Georgia. The park is approximately 12 miles north of Americus and 11 miles south of Montezuma on GA-49.
The first prisoners arrived in February of 1864, before the stockade fence was completed. The prisoners had been kept close to Richmond, VA. Camp Sumter, as Andersonville was officially called, provided more security as it was deeper behind confederate lines. Guard towers were placed every 90-100 ft. It was designed to house 6,000 prisoners. However, in just six months, there were 32,000 prisoners.
The prison, which opened in February 1864, originally covered about acres (67,000 m 2 ) of land enclosed by a 15-foot ( m) high stockade. In June 1864 it was enlarged to acres (107,000 m 2 ). The stockade was in the shape of a rectangle 1,620 feet (490 m) by 779 feet (237 m). There were two entrances on the west side of the stockade, known as "north entrance" and "south entrance".
Its stockade, in which prisoners were detained, measured 1,600 feet by 780 feet, and was designed to hold a maximum of 10,000 prisoners.
Andersonville was built to hold 10,000 men, but within six months more than three times that number were incarcerated there. The creek banks eroded to create a swamp, which occupied a significant portion of the compound. Rations were inadequate, and at times half of the population was reported ill. Some guards brutalized the inmates and violence broke out between factions of prisoners.

Heinrich Hartmann Wirz was born on November 25, 1823 in Zurich , Switzerland , to Hans Caspar Wirz and Sophie Barbara Philipp. Wirz received elementary and secondary education, and he aspired to become a physician but his family did not possess funds to pay for his medical education. Instead he became a merchant , working in Zurich and Turin . Wirz had married Emilie Oschwald in 1845 and had two children, and in April 1847 received a four-year prison term for inability to return money that he borrowed. The court commuted his sentence to 12-year forcible emigration, but his wife refused to emigrate and obtained a divorce in 1853.
