Sleepwalking is much more common in children and young adults than in older adults. This is because as people age, they have less N3 sleep. Sleepwalking tends to run in families.

A sleepwalking episode can last from a few seconds to as long as 30 minutes. On average, however, they last for less than 10 minutes. A team at Hopital du Sacre-Coeur de Montreal analysed sleep data from a group of 1,940 children born in Quebec in 1997 and 1998 and studied in 1999 to 2011. Parents had to fill out a questionnaire in which they detailed their own sleep patterns, but also those of their children. The researchers focused on sleepwalking and sleep terror incidents. Sleep terrors are episodes of screaming, intense fear and flailing while still asleep. These are considered to be distinct from nightmares and linked to sleep walking.
Sleepwalking runs in families, indicating that there is a genetic component. The identical twin of a person who sleepwalks often, for example, typically shares this nocturnal habit. Studies have also shown that frequent sleepwalking is associated with sleep deprivation, fever, stress and intake of drugs, especially sedatives, hypnotics, antipsychotics, stimulants and antihistamines.
Researchers found, in fact, that the memory recall can vary, with some sleepwalkers retaining memories of their episodes and others not. During an episode of sleepwalking, people are in a state that researchers call “dissociated arousal,” with parts of the brain in a sleeping state and other parts of the brain in a waking state. This may help to explain why some can remember their experiences while others cannot.
