Basically, you need to look for key words . These words will give you the first pointer that you need to write an essay that is structured correctly. For example, if an essay question is asking you to ‘compare and contrast’ you will adopt a different technique from if it is asking you to ‘discuss’. This is because you will be adopting a structure which puts points against one another in the first but you will be addressing a theme and forming an argument in the second. Sound complicated? Read on!
Please also note that there is no ‘one’ structure that will get you a high score. There are many types of structures that can get you a high score. These are just the ones I think are most effective and easiest to learn.
Some students find it helpful to write a rough conclusion first, before they write the essay, so they know where they're going. They rewrite it, if necessary, when they've finished reviewing and editing the essay

A compound sentence has two independent clauses and a coordinating conjunction . An example of a compound sentence would be: 'Jack went up the front of the hill, and Jill went up the side of the hill.' You can count the number of independent clauses by counting the number of subjects and verbs. There are two subjects: Jack and Jill, and there are two verbs: going up the front of the hill and going up the side of the hill. The two clauses are linked using a conjunction - and.
Connie knows that the most important element of the introductory paragraph , perhaps even the whole paper, is the thesis statement . The thesis will identify the argument she'll make through her research and provide readers with a preview of the essay's main points. Without a properly formatted thesis statement, Connie's essay is doomed to failure. Since Connie has three body paragraphs to make her argument, she'll need to make sure she has - that's right - three main points or one for each paragraph.
Centralisation is another key feature in the structure of an organisation. This underlines the locality of decision making in an organisation and through this develops an understanding of the authority and responsibility in the organisation. Everybody in an organisation has responsibility, but when it is used in terms of the structure it refers to those who have a larger effect on the overall managerial aspect. In Jaguar, for instance, it is assumed that the CEO (Commanding Executive Officer) is responsible for the performance of the company; at the next level down would be the marketing director, who would be held responsible for achieving marketing objectives and so on.
In an academic essay, the purpose of a paragraph is to support a single claim or idea that helps establish the overall argument or purpose of the paper. Paragraphs should be focused around this single idea or point, and they should be clearly related to what comes before them.

The second paragraph of the body should contain the second strongest argument, second most significant example, second cleverest illustration, or an obvious follow up the first paragraph in the body. The first sentence of this paragraph should include the reverse hook which ties in with the transitional hook at the end of the first paragraph of the body. The topic for this paragraph should be in the first or second sentence. This topic should relate to the thesis statement in the introductory paragraph. The last sentence in this paragraph should include a transitional hook to tie into the third paragraph of the body.

Always begin with a topic sentence which states what theme/concept/aspect of the text you will be discussing in the paragraph. After this, explain this theme/concept/aspect in further detail, drawing in contextual information if relevant to your argument. Then, introduce a textual example to support your argument and identify the techniques the composer uses to demonstrate their effect on meaning. Repeat as required. End with a concluding sentence that summarises your key point in the body paragraph. Follow this structure for however many body paragraphs you have.

In the five-paragraph essay, the "body" is all "affirmation"; the "narration" and "negation" (and its "refutation" or "concession") make the five-part essay less "thesis-driven" and more balanced and fair. Rhetorically, the transition from affirmation to negation (and refutation or concession) is typically indicated by contrastive terms such as "but", "however", and "on the other hand".
IELTS essays get marked quickly. You don’t want to allow the examiner to make a mistake. So make life easy for him/her by showing the structure of your essay as clearly as possible. There are 4/5 places you do this – what I think of as being the spine of the essay . (your spine is your backbone – it’s what keeps you upright and gives you your structure).
However, when writing an essay, it can also be difficult to come up with a point of view early on. Therefore, instead of developing a thesis statement first, you may choose to read up on the assignment question and make notes on relevant concepts, theories, and studies. Once you have these notes and can develop a summary of the issues, it should be much easier to write a thesis statement.
